Healthy Skin, Healthy Body

When we think of skincare, we often think “treatment” rather than “prevention”. The road to beautiful skin begins with good hygiene, proper diet and limiting sun exposure. Of course, good genes help, too!! A simple review of good skincare practices is a reminder of what we can do each day to prevent skin problems:
• A balanced diet filled with nutritious fruits and vegetables that are rich in vitamin A and anti-oxidants, such as carrots, leafy greens and berries, along with drinking at least 8 glasses of water a day, is the foundation of a healthy body and great skin.
• Plenty of sleep to rebuild skin cells, along with stress-busting exercise can lead to fewer breakouts, but always remember to cleanse your face every morning, after exercising and before going to bed.
• A gentle PH-balanced cleanser does the trick in removing bacteria, unclogging pores and washing away other impurities. Don’t forget to wash your hands often to keep from transferring bacteria and other environmental pollutants to your face.
• Of course, we all have learned about the dangers of prolonged exposure to the sun’s damaging rays, and if healthy radiant skin is what you’re after, stay out of the sun between the hours of 10AM and 2PM, if possible. Regardless of where you are, ALWAYS wear a moisturizer or foundation with SPF 30 protection or you’ll be seeing changes in your skin you won’t like. Wrinkles, discoloration and collagen breakdown are all accelerated with exposure to the sun.
• And when the inevitable breakout occurs, soothing products like Key West Aloe’s Hydraclear helps cleanse, hydrate and reduce skin inflammation. Remember that when all else fails, a visit to a board certified dermatologist is a good idea.
Getting back to the basics………..a good place to start!
